Near the end of his term, President Biden complained during an interview posted Thursday that the media landscape had changed drastically — and specifically called out the “billionaires” who bought the major newspapers.
When asked by MeidasTouch host Ben Meiselas why there wasn’t positive news about Biden’s economy circulating in the media and whether there was too much focus on “horse race” politics, the president said technology was changing the process for “everything “. .
“Technology is changing everything,” Biden said. “I think you guys are incredibly successful because you speak the truth, and you say this is what I think the facts are, and you roll it out and you speak it. But it’s hard, there are very few editors anymore, very few editors who say you can’t write this,” Biden said.
He also shared, “You have billionaires buying standard newspapers that are popular and saying we’re not going to do this anymore because I don’t want to do it.”
Biden said it will take some time for it to be “sorted out.”
Biden appeared to be referring to recent decisions by billionaire newspaper owners to avoid endorsements in the 2024 race between President-elect Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The president was not asked about Harris’ loss to Trump, his decision to drop out of the race or the controversial pardon of his son, Hunter Biden, during the friendly interview.
Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos decided to end the newspaper’s tradition of endorsing a presidential candidate before the election. The editorial board had already written the endorsement for Harris, as expected of the liberal paper, before Bezos rescinded it.
The move angered liberals at The Washington Post who had previously backed both Hillary Clinton and Biden over Trump and criticized him as the worst president in modern history.
The billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong also prevented his liberal editorial board from endorsing Harris this election cycle, angering staff and prompting resignations.
During the rare interview, Biden said that “overall” he had no regrets about his presidency when asked if he would have done anything differently in the past four years.
